The Baboon Show - Punkrock Harbour Review

A couple of days ago I headed for the Hafermarkt Flensburg to see 'The Baboon Show' from Stockholm, Sweden.
Baboons... ok I thought, what'll this be all about?

I was disabused quickly - the band's performance totally convinced me. They convinced me so much that I bought their new album "Punkrock Harbour" which I´d like to introduce to you in a few lines now.

This zippy disc comes in a phat Super Jewel Box with an unfolding inlay. The cover is all black-ish with grey spikes and jags, it looks somewhat like a zinc surface. In addition to that, we´ve got a fancy band photo on the top. Unfolded we have all the song texts and a bit of extra information on one side, along with a declaration of war to the swedish bourgeois capitalist 'Alliansen' government. There is some sort of a playboard for a small dice game on the other side, now that's something!

Well, into the laser machine with that disk and here we go! But what's that: The first guitar chords let me tremble. They sound very much like this indie pop crap they're playing on the radio all day long – compressed til death, trash without dynamics.
But then it comes all different, the drums and the vocals clash in and it's no indie crap at all, it is music of the finest! The drums are significantly more crunchy and the voice is very strong, its the direct opposite of that indie whining I was afraid of. It is pretty much punk rock after all and it's very nice to listen to as well, it is almost 'easy listening'.
The guitar mostly refrains from thrashing in a rude manner and plays some neat chords and rhythmic tunes instead, most of the time it's just slightly distorted.
Completed with a smart and kicking drumset, some subtle bass lines in the back and a remarkable and powerful, sometimes polyphonic female voice, it yields some real good ear candy. They added a little extra something to the mix from time to time, so there are definitely some neat gimmicks to discover.
The texts of 'The Baboon Show' are located somewhere between socialist revolution and punk rock party and deal with stiffs, hanger-ons, bumlickers, hypocrites, self-betrayal, the endless fight against police, getting fired from the job, the struggle for independence and other important stuff.

So for your moola you will get a tad more than 25 minutes stuffed with eleven diverting songs, it is really worth it! This band is pushing ahead, sounds great and on top of that it's got intelligent lyrics in the spirit of the time. So don't miss your chance to get that record and go to their concerts, it's a must!

The Baboon Show - Punkrock Harbour Review

The bridges that you've burnt".

Must have!
